The label may have changed, but the juice has remained the same; beautiful, and priced just right. Anthony Dell Cellars has decided to undergo a cosmetic label update. Not one of those overstretched facelifts, but a classy change that will continue to present their boutique wine well. Doug Anthony Drawbond and Joy Dell changed their label for the 2006 vintage to an elegant and beautiful sketch of their straw bale house (I’m serious…) and vineyard.
In 2002, Doug and Joy founded Anthony Dell Cellars, basing the philosophy of the business on some fundamental beliefs they hold dear. Doug and Joy produce wines they enjoy drinking, wines that showcase the fruit, wines that are balanced with “just enough” oak. Doug and Joy are focused the whole experience of friends, food and wine and believe that one should give more than one takes, which is demonstrated in the value of their high quality wines.
Anthony Dell Cellars 2005 Willamette Valley Pinot Noir Doug and Joy sourced the majority of the fruit for the 2005 vintage from their estate Sunset Ridge Vineyard in the Eola Amity Hills AVA, and 18% of the fruit from the Cancilla Vineyard, which is located near Gaston, OR, in the foothills of the Oregon Coast Range. The microclimate there has warm days and cool nights with ideal ripening conditions and consistently produces complex Pinot noirs with great structure. The all-encompassing nose incorporates a freshness and light Oregon funk with slight sweetness of ripe blackberries, floral qualities and a touch of minerality. Having big dark fruit bramble, black plum skins, a pleasant meatiness, super tannins and a classic Eola Hills spice, this doesn’t drink like most Pinot noirs I’ve met. This baby needs beef!
Anthony Dell Cellars 2006 Sunset Ridge Vineyard Pinot Noir The Sunset Ridge Vineyard is located in the Eola Hills. The three acre estate was planted in 1997 on a west facing slope southeast of Amity, Oregon. The 2006 has softer, rounder and more floral aromatics, including eucalyptus, birch bark, red berries and cherries. My palate was completely entranced by a well-balanced wine that showcases bright red fruit and spice with a soft satiny mouthfeel. fine tannins and a lengthy finish. The 2006 is completely different from the 2005, so I can’t decide which I like better, regardless of the labels.
